A virus on your laptop is stressful — especially when you have important files at risk. Many people panic and immediately format their laptop, losing all their data in the process. This guide shows you how to handle a virus infection properly, step by step.
STEP 1: DON'T PANIC AND DON'T FORMAT YET
The biggest mistake people make is immediately formatting their laptop. Most viruses can be removed without wiping your data. Formatting should be the last resort after all removal attempts have failed.
STEP 2: DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET
Turn off WiFi and unplug any ethernet cables. Many viruses and spyware continuously communicate with remote servers — disconnecting cuts off their ability to steal data or receive new instructions.
STEP 3: BACK UP IMPORTANT FILES
Before any cleanup, copy critical files (documents, photos, projects) to an external drive or pen drive. Don't copy executable (.exe) files as they may be infected. If you're unsure which files are safe, call us — we can help identify and safely back up clean files.
STEP 4: BOOT INTO SAFE MODE
Restart your laptop and press F8 (older Windows) or hold Shift while clicking Restart (Windows 10/11) → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Safe Mode with Networking. Most malware cannot run in Safe Mode.
STEP 5: RUN A FULL ANTIVIRUS SCAN
In Safe Mode, run Windows Defender (built-in) for a full scan. Better yet, download Malwarebytes Free and run a full system scan. Quarantine and delete all detected threats. Restart normally and run the scan again to confirm clean.
STEP 6: CHECK BROWSER EXTENSIONS
Go to Chrome/Edge/Firefox Settings → Extensions — remove any extensions you don't recognize. Reset browser settings to default. Clear all cookies and cached data.
